When things are not going well within a family, words are said and actions taken that can make things worse. The effects often extend into other areas, such as work, school, and other relationships. Family therapy can help reduce the conflict and improve the interactions between members.
When working with families, I utilize a family systems approach. This looks at how the family works together as a whole and does not target or place blame on any individuals. A safe and comfortable space is provided where members are able to discuss issues honestly. Ineffective patterns of interacting or communicating are replaced with new healthier ones. Existing strengths of individuals and the family as a whole will be built upon.
Goals:
*Reduced conflict
*Better understanding of family dynamics and interactions
*Healthier and respectful boundaries
*Improved communication
*A better sense of cohesion
*Improved empathy and understanding of fellow family members
It sometimes takes a major disruption for a family to seek help. Some of these may be:
*A child is struggling with school, depression, behavioral issues
*Parental conflict
*Conflict between family members
*A change in jobs or schools
*Moving or a change in who is living at home
*The loss of a family member
*Addiction or mental illness
*Divorce
*Blended families
